LASER VEIN
THERAPY
How
does laser vein therapy work?
Our
laser system delivers pulses of light energy to your unwanted veins,
which causes them to close up. Unsightly leg veins do not serve an
important role in blood circulation and actually hinder the proper flow
of blood in the legs. Laser treated veins shrink and are re-absorbed by
the body. Blood flow will then be redirected to deeper veins below your
skin’s surface, where it should be.
Who
can be treated?
Our laser allows treatment of almost all
skin tones. Treatment is less effective with very dark skin tones.
What
types of problems can be treated?
Our
laser can remove unsightly veins and vascular markings from all parts of
the body. Small facial veins can be treated quickly without
bruising. Spider veins and some larger blue leg veins can also
be treated with excellent results. Cherry-Red Spots (cherry angiomas)
respond often with just one treatment. Red birthmarks can also
be treated. Unfortunately, knotty or ropey varicose veins which bulge
from the surface of the skin cannot be treated with a non-invasive
laser.
How
many treatments do I need?
Often, patients find that 1 or 2 treatments are sufficient; however, the
number of treatments necessary depends on the number, color and size of
the veins being treated.
Do
the treatments hurt?
Our
laser cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of
light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging
sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically
required; however, we can provide a topical anesthetic when sensitive
areas are treated.
What
happens after the treatment?
Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and
swollen. Some veins may initially appear darker, before fading away
over the next few weeks. Other veins may show immediate improvement.
Some larger veins may require support wrapping for a day or two.
What
are the possible side effects?
Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most
commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin.
These effects last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience
bruising and, in rare instances, blistering may occur. For larger
veins, a tan or brownish pigment may appear (as the veins disappear) and
persist for several weeks. Our doctors can provide complete information
on the risks and benefits of treatment.
Are
there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
Patients generally resume most normal activities immediately. However
it is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous
exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment. The use of sunscreen
of SPF 30+ is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
When
will I see results?
Most
patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown
significant improvement within 2 to 6 weeks of treatment. However, your
final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is
possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed with
laser treatment.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is based on length of time needed for treatment. An estimate of
the required treatment time will be determined after the initial
consultation depending upon how much the patient wants done and the
condition of their veins.
